DIFFERENT GRADES OF CONCRETE AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

Grade of concrete is the designation of concrete according to its compresive strength. It is defined as the minimum strength of the concrete must own after 28 days of construction with proper quality control. Grade of concrete in construction is selected based on structural design.
Concrete grade are denoted by M5, M7.5, M10, M15,M20 etc according to their compressive strength.

The "M" denotes Mix design of concrete and the numerical value stands for characteristic compressive strength of the concrete after 28 days in MPa.

"Mix" is the respective ingredient proportions which are Cement:Sand:Aggregate
  OR (Cement:Fine Aggregate: Coarse Aggregate)

Eg: M20
M - Denotes Mix Design of concrete.
Mix Design - Is the respective ingredients proportion which is Cement:Sand:Aggregate.
20 - Denotes the characteristic compresive strength (150mmX150mmX150mm) size of concrete cube after 28 days of curring in MPa or N/mm2.

Grade of concrete are mainly classified in the fallowing categories;
  1. Lean Concrete
  2. Ordinary Concrete
  3. Standard Concrete
  4. High Strength Concrete
LEAN CONCRETE
M5 GRADE:

Mix Ratio is 1:5:10 (1 Cement, 5 Sand, 10 Aggregate)
Application: To provide the uniform surface to the foundation concrete and to prevent the direct contact of foundation concrete from soil.

M7.5 GRADE:

Mix Ratio is 1:4:8 (1 Cement, 4 Sand, 8 Aggregate)
Application: To provide the uniform surface to the foundation concrete and to prevent the direct contact of foundation concrete from soil.

ORDINARY GRADE OF CONCRETE

M10 GRADE:

Mix Ratio is 1:3:6 (1 Cement, 3 Sand, 6 Aggregate)
It is used in PCC   (Plain Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of levelling course, bedding for footing, concrete road etc.

M15 GRADE:

Mix Ratio is 1:2:4 (1 Cement, 2 Sand, 4 Aggregate)
It is used in PCC   (Plain Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of levelling course, bedding for footing, concrete road etc.

M20 GRADE:

Mix Ratio is 1:1.5:3 (1 Cement, 1.5 Sand, 3 Aggregate)
It is used in RCC      (Reinforced Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of slabs, beams, columns, footings etc.

STANDARD GRADE OF CONCRETE

M25 GRADE:

Mix Ratio is 1:1:2(1 Cement, 1 Sand, 2 Aggregate)
It is used in RCC  (Reinforced Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of slabs, beams, columns, footings etc.

M30 GRADE:

It is used in RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of slabs, beams, columns, footings etc.

M35 GRADE:

It is used in RCC  (Reinforced Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of slabs, beams, columns, footings etc.

M40 GRADE:

It is used in RCC  (Reinforced Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of Pre-stressed concrete, slabs, beams,
columns,footings etc.

M45 GRADE:

It is used in RCC  (Reinforced Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of Runways, concrete road, pressurised
concrete gridders,RCC columns,pressurised beams etc.

M50 GRADE:

It is used in RCC  (Reinforced Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of Runways, concrete road, pressurised
concrete gridders,RCC columns,pressurised beams etc.

M55 GRADE:

It is used in RCC  (Reinforced Cement Concrete)
Application: It can be used in construction of Pressurised concrete gridders and Pier.

HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE GRADE

M60 GRADE:

It is used in RCC  (Reinforced Cement Concrete)
Applications:
  • Construction in aggresive enviroment.
  • Spillways of Dams, coastal construction of a passage for surplus water from a dam.
  • It can be used in RCC work where high compressive strength is strength is required such as high rise buildings, long span bridges, ultra-thin white topping ets.
